Our Farm Animals
Meet Oxford: Our Farm Dog and Guardian
As you journey down the slope, you're likely to meet Oxford, our friendly and loyal farm dog. Oxford is our guardian, keeping a watchful eye over the farm when we are away or working in the fields. She also looks after our chickens and goats, ensuring everything stays in harmony.
Our Free-Range Chickens and Their Role on the Farm
Underneath the main house, you'll find a terrace where our chickens roam. They provide us with fresh eggs year-round and help keep our terraces clear of weeds while controlling pests in our orchard.
Goats and Their Milk: A Key Ingredient for Our Cheese
On the west side of the main house, you’ll find the goat barn, home to our milking goats. The close proximity to the house makes milking twice a day easy and efficient. Our goats deliver the milk that we use to make our cheeses which we proudly make on-site.
Connected to the barn is a 1-hectare goat field, divided into three parts to allow for rotational grazing. This ensures the health and well-being of the goats while maintaining a sustainable land management system.
Garden & Orchard
Our Fruit Trees Orchard: A Bounty of Flavors
On the eastern side of the main house, you'll find our terraces filled with fruit trees. Over the years, we’ve planted around 80 trees, including apples, pears, apricots, peaches, figs, oranges, and lemons. While some trees are still small, others have matured and provide a bountiful harvest.
When the fruit is abundant, we preserve it by dehydrating it or turning it into jams and chutneys, ensuring we can enjoy our harvest throughout the year.
Our Vegetable Garden: Growing with the Community
Our 400 m² vegetable garden is located in the Monchique Community Garden. The soil here is rich and fertile, and the area offers better access to water throughout the year. This garden allows us to grow a wide variety of vegetables, complementing the food we produce on the farm.
Living Quarters
Our Cottage: A Cozy Retreat for Your Stay
Further down the slope, you'll come across The Cottage, available for rent from April to October. Built using traditional rammed earth techniques, this charming cottage embodies the rustic spirit of the region. Inside, the wooden roof and mezzanine create a warm, inviting atmosphere, perfect for a relaxing holiday. The simple yet functional layout makes it an ideal base for your stay.
The Cottage also serves as the location for most of our vegetable gardening and self-sufficiency courses, including workshops on vegetable gardening and sustainable living.
The Main House: Our Hub for Cheese and Jam Production
Just a bit further down, you'll find the Main House, where Tom and Monique live. This is where we make all our cheese and jam in our production kitchen. Every step of the process, from milking the goats to turning the milk into cheese, takes place here.
Our cheese making courses will also take place in this real cheese making kitchen.
